FAQAmbient Lights

How many ambient lights can I have, and what do the zones mean?

You can configure up to 8 ambient lights. Set the count on the Ambient Lights page, then choose how they are configured:

  • Grouped applies the same settings to every light.
  • Per Light configures each one individually.

Zones pick a part of your SCREEN, not a place in your room. This is the thing people most often get backwards. A zone maps to a region of the on screen image, and DNR averages the colour from that area. So a lamp physically sitting to the left of your monitor should be given the Left or Left Outer zone, because that is the part of the picture you want it to follow. Global samples the whole captured screen with no split, which is the right choice for a single light meant to reflect everything at once. Above and Below take the top and bottom of the view.

Capture Target decides what the light follows:

  • Track, the default, samples the moving track and sky through your windows. It is the most vivid, but because the top of the screen shows the road ahead, light changes can appear slightly before the car actually reaches them.
  • Cockpit samples the light reflected on your dashboard and interior. It changes exactly when the car passes through a shadow, never early. Best with a cockpit view, and it falls back to Track automatically if no dashboard is visible, such as in a bonnet or chase camera.

⚠️ The spotter effect is disabled while you are in Grouped mode, and the plugin says so on the setting. Spotters need to light one side or the other, which is meaningless when every light is being driven identically. If your ambient spotter is not working, switch to Per Light. You also need more than one lighting device for it to mean anything.
